What are protein bars?
Do our products contain nuts?
Not all of the products are made with nuts in their ingredients, however they are all made in the same facility and therefore we cannot give a 100% nut free guarantee.
Can I buy the bars in stores in the U.S.?
The bars are not available in stores across the U.S. except for in New York. We do however sell online to the states and have created subsidized pricing for individual bar purchasing. We did this because we understand that there are many Americans that have never tried the bars and we wanted to make it easier and more cost effective for you to try them.
Where is the company located?
We are proudly a Canadian company located in the heart of downtown Toronto.
Is the bar safe for diabetics?
Yes! The Peanut Butter, Lemon Coconut and Cocoa Coffee bars were designed for diabetics. Instead of using large amounts of fat, they rely on Non Genetically Modified soy protein and low glycemic agave nectar.
1 Simply Bar= 3 lean proteins and 1 carbohydrate choice
Is the bar suitable for children?
Children under age 10 should eat only half a bar at a time due to the large amount of protein in each bar. Also, this bar should not be eaten by those on low protein diets.
Is the bar suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Yes: unlike many other bars, we use no gelatin or whey. Other bars turn to casein or whey for protein, however as these are milk proteins, we do not use these proteins. The soy protein we use is not genetically modified.
Why soy?
Soy has received a lot of attention for all sorts of wonderful things (everything from heart health to weight loss to menopause…). The wonderful attributes are due to the isoflavones in the whole soy bean. The Simply Bar is actually low in these isoflavones so we claim none of these benefits. We use soy simply because it is a whole protein (contains all of the essential amino acids), vegetarian and, most importantly, easy-to-digest.
Is soy really easy-to-digest?
Yes: soy protein is very quickly absorbed. The same is true for tofu and fermented soy products. Many people believe that soy gives them gas and bloating. And the whole soy bean probably does. But tofu and soy protein products are very different from soy flour.
How is soy protein different from soy flour?
It is the oligosaccharides in soy flour which cause problems with gas and bloating. These carbohydrates require the enzyme alpha-galactosidase to be broken down properly. Unfortunately humans often do not have enough of this enzyme. So when these carbs are not broken down in the small intestine, they pass to the large where they are fermented by bacteria causing gas and bloating. “Soy protein isolate (SPI) is almost pure protein and thus considered practically free of "flatulence factors". Making things worse, soy flour also contains enzyme inhibitors which further delay the absorption of the full soy bean.
Extracted soy protein contains none of these enzyme inhibitors or carbohydrates. Thus many people who avoid soy flour are completely fine when consuming isolated soy protein. But as each of us is different, the best test is always to try. Eat a large serving of soy flour one morning and observe your symptoms. The next day, try a product made with soy protein.
Please note that there is a big difference between having an intolerance to soy and an allergy. If you have a true soy allergy, by no means should you try a soy protein product.
Are all your products certified gluten-free?
Yes! The Gluten-Free Certification Organization ( GFCO) certifies our entire product list.
Is your facility gluten-free?
Yes, our facility is maintained within a gluten-free environment. It should be noted that our facility also manufactures oats. Oats are naturally gluten-free. However, there is some concern whether the oats are grown in a field that at some point grew other gluten containing grains. Rest assured, our oats are tested for gluten before and after each usage.
How often do you screen for gluten?
After consulting a dietitian at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, we new we had to improve our standards of testing. We still follow strict manufacturing practices and now incorporate R5-Elisa testing by Bia Diagnostics. We are proud to share our tasty protein bars with our celiac friends. At ‹5ppm we are considered a safe source of nutrition for even the greatest gluten-intolerant consumer.
How will you be broadcasting your gluten-free message?
We are currently working on our labeling to get the message out to anyone with questions regarding our gluten-free criteria. Look out for new additions to our boxes in 2011 with information on our ppm level and certifications. Please let us know if there is anything else you would like us to add! We love hearing for you.
