100 calorie snacks

In honour of the launch of our new 100 calorie bar, we compiled a list of 100 calorie snacks. By far the best bang for your buck is eating vegetables. There was a great post the other day on FitSugar with the amount of vegetables you can consume for 100 calories: it is really astounding! http://www.fitsugar.com/Calories-Raw-Veggies-8500455

  • 18 stalks of celery!
  • 20 raw large mushrooms! (I know two people who eat a lot of mushrooms and will be thrilled to read this!)
  • 28 baby carrots!

But just in case you want a little more variety, here are some other options.

The pure carbohydrate options:

  • 3 cups air-popped popcorn
  • 1 package of instant oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup of spaghetti

Candy options: some very poor choices…they won’t keep you full… but tasty!

  • 1/5 Toblerone bar
  • 3 After Eight Mints
  • 10 Jelly Bellies

 Fruits

  • 1 medium banana
  • 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 medium pear
  • 1 cup of strawberries

These are good options but better if paired with some fat or protein to bring down the glycemic index. So you can try half a banana with peanut butter. Half a pear and gorgonzola. Or an apple with cheddar. Or for those of us who don’t eat dairy (digestive or ethical reasons), there is a new cheese which is apparently fantastic. I read about it in Macleans and have yet to try it. But I am on a mission to find it. Ironically it is made in Canada but mainly available in the states… hmmm…Daiya Deliciously Free Dairy Cheese… would love more info from anyone who has tried it… http://www.daiyafoods.com/

Some protein options: these are a good idea as the protein helps to fill you up.

  • carrots with hummus
  • 2 egg whites with one slice of gluten free toast
  • 1 cup light yogurt
  • 8 shrimp with 4 tbsp cocktail sauce
  • 1/2 cup of  edamame
  • 1 celery stalk with a tbsp of peanut butter -or- cream cheese
  • 1 scrambled egg made with soy milk

And of course Simply Snack in caramel flavour… our newest bar in The Simply Bar family.

100 calories, 10 grams of protein. And we think they are the best bars yet. But we are biased…

I had no idea strawberries had that many calories, actually! Quite an interesting list. Of course, I’m sure the Simply Bar would be my favorite, too (well. . . I’m not allowed Toblerone or After Eights on my anti-candida regime!) ;)

Great list Cathy! My favorite snacks are usually an apple drizzled with a wee bit of honey and a good bit of cinnamon (sometimes just the cinnamon if I don’t need sweet) and rice cakes – but my rice cakes are always more than 100 calories since I top them with nut butter protein “frosting.”

I love the caramel Simply snack bars. I have tried most of the flavours out there and so far this one tastes the best and has the greatest texture.

Kathy thanks for the 100 calorie snack ideas….I can’t believe that I can munch on that many stalks of celery for so little calories…
